Not even three hours had passed since the opening of Zona Maco and the work “Lavado de cara” (2024) by Eugenio Merino (Madrid, 1975) had already been bought (the amount was not disclosed). He didn’t expect it either. In a space where many people are looking for art for their personal collections, it is difficult to sell installations, especially of hard themes such as politics and violence, which remind us of reality.
But this sculpture, which consists of a dishwasher with plates printed with the faces of 15 Mexican presidents since 1929, led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Enrique Peña Nieto and Felipe Calderón, was the exception.
