Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend is holding its largest edition to date from 10 to 13 September, with sixty galleries jointly presenting their new exhibitions. This scale of the event, however, is overshadowed by a serious structural problem: sales in galleries are taxed at 21 per cent, whilst much of Europe applies reduced rates. This disparity reduces competitiveness, drives business away from Spain and forces galleries to cut their margins in order to compete.
