Raúl Zurita is one of the foremost figures in contemporary Spanish-language poetry. Although he initially studied Civil Engineering, he later turned to the humanities at the University of Chile. Closely associated with artistic experimentation from the outset of his career, he emerged as a major literary voice with the publication of Purgatorio (1979), a landmark work shaped by his experience as a political prisoner and by the profound scars left by Chile’s military dictatorship.

He subsequently established himself as one of the most influential poets in Latin American literature, publishing seminal works such as Anteparaíso (1982), Canto a su amor desaparecido (1985), and El amor de Chile (1987). Alongside his literary career, he has lectured at leading institutions including Harvard, Columbia, and Stanford universities, and in 1990 he was appointed Chile’s Cultural Attaché in Rome.

Associated with the Neo-Avant-Garde, Zurita’s work redefines poetic language through writing of remarkable symbolic and emotional intensity. His poetry intertwines memory, landscape, love, loss, and political violence, while drawing on influences ranging from the natural world to Dante’s Divine Comedy, a formative presence in the development of his literary imagination.

Zurita’s artistic practice extends beyond the printed page, treating the landscape as a medium for poetic expression. His celebrated large-scale interventions —including the monumental inscription «Ni pena ni miedo» carved into the Atacama Desert and poems written across the sky over New York— have expanded the boundaries of poetry, transforming it into a visual, public, and site-specific experience.

Translated into numerous languages, Zurita’s work has received widespread international recognition and has been honoured with some of the most prestigious awards in Hispanic literature, including Chile’s National Prize for Literature, the Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Poetry Prize, the Queen Sofía Ibero-American Poetry Prize, and the Alberto Dubito International Prize.
