Lives and works in Mexico

Gustavo Pérez is considered one of the most internationally renowned Latin American artists in the ceramic medium. For almost fifty years, clay has offered Gustavo Pérez endless creative possibilities.

He discovered the potential of clay during a visit to the ceramics department of the School of Design and Crafts of Mexico in 1971. Abandoning engineering, mathematics and philosophy, he decided on ceramics.

Later, residencies in the Netherlands, Japan, France and the United States allowed him to learn about porcelain. From his first creations, his multiple influences are visible, which will continue to feed his work over the years: architecture, nature, dance, music, geometry, astronomy, mineralogy, but also ancient cultures and, in particular, pre-Columbian. Drawing, which he practices daily, modifies his approach to the material. In 2018, he participated alongside Joaquín Torres García and kinetic artists such as Jesus Soto, in the revision exhibition Géométries Sud, du Mexique à la Terre de Feu,, organized by the Fondation Cartier, in Paris.

His work is part of important public and private collections, among which the following stand out: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, United States), Museum of Modern Art (Mexico City, Mexico), Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (Paris, France), Museo Carrillo Gil (Mexico City, Mexico), Benaki Museum (Athens, Greece), Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Riga, Latvia), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, United States), The Museum of Ceramic Art (Shiga, Japan), The Museum of Fine Arts (Quebec, Canada), Ernesto Poma Collection (Miami, United States), Mario Cader-Frech Collection (Miami, United States), among others.
